INSIGHTS

Suhail Bindra recently served as an adjudicator in the Preliminary Round of the Basic Law Mooting Series 2026, organised by the Advocacy and Mooting Society (AMS), Faculty of Law, The University of Hong Kong. Suhail co-adjudicated two Junior Division moots alongside Keith Tam. The competition brought together undergraduate law students at an early stage of their legal education. Many of the participants were taking part in either their first or second moot, providing an important opportunity to develop their advocacy skills in a supportive yet challenging environment. Beyond assessing the competitors’ performances, Suhail and his fellow adjudicators provided detailed feedback following each round. Discussions focused on core advocacy skills, including responding effectively to judicial intervention, deploying authorities strategically, and adapting submissions when faced with unexpected questions from the bench.

AMS thanked Suhail for his contribution and noted that participants found his observations on judicial intervention particularly valuable, highlighting how the guidance would assist them in future advocacy competitions:

“We are especially thankful for your insightful reminder on how participants should be confident in judicial intervention from the bench, not to become defensive or conceding, rather, to use it as a way to assist the court. The participants reflected that they have benefited greatly from your kind advice, which will help them greatly in their performances in future competitions.”

Reflecting on the experience, Suhail commented:

“One of the most rewarding aspects of mooting is seeing aspiring advocates develop the confidence to engage with difficult questions from the bench. It was encouraging to see such enthusiasm and potential among the students taking part.”

Prince’s Chambers is committed to supporting initiatives that help develop the next generation of advocates and legal professionals, and congratulates all participants for their hard work and commitment throughout the competition.
